In light of the Ted Haggard scandal, let's pray that God have mercy. Let's pray that God have mercy on Ted Haggard, his family, and his congregation. More importantly, let's pray that God have mercy on all of us Chritians, because we're sinners, 'wretched and wrecked by the fall,' 'daily debtors to grace constrained to be,' 'wanting to do good, but instead doing evil.' Let's not look at Ted Haggard and say that we're glad we're not like him. Let's identify with Ted Haggard, saying that his struggle with the flesh is our struggle, and pray that God have mercy on us, the Church.

I heard he was accused by the media and others, of using illicit drugs and having sex with another man, and I saw some interviews last week, but I don't keep up with the news much. So, has he admitted that these accusations are true? If so, what can we say? Chalk another one up for the evil one and his insidious designs on us?

I am guilty in thought of many things worse than even what they accuse this minister of, and I know that I would do even worse things if the grace of God didn't constrain me. Yes, if he has had a fall, pray for him, by all means. But more than that, pray for the Church, because we have no sure way of knowing who is the wheat and who the tares.

Amen, twice.

My first thought was this is a public relations nightmare for the Church.
Can you tell my job is in full time ministry?

Hate to break it to you, but Haggard's problems aren't with flesh, they're with hypocrisy. You can take drugs. You can be gay. (I'll be happy to debate the theological ins and outs of those points with you if you wish.) But you can't condemn those activities from the pulpit while engaging in them yourself.

So if you pray for Haggard, pray that he might heed the advice of Polonius: "This above all, to thine own self be true - and it must follow as the night the day that thou canst not then be false to any man."
